Crap Construction October 31, 2009 Ozdagg (Taiwan) My first multifunction watch. Bit complicated to set up and adjust but enjoyed using it. but this was all negated when the band broke away from the watch body. Now, a broken band or connector pin is easily to fix but in this case the pin recess on the watch cracked and the corner of the watch body fell away. I was horrified to see it was made of plastic, and not even reinforced with metal. Tried to glue it, and took it to two different watchmakers - couldn't be fixed. Cheap crap materials.
Leaky!!! August 7, 2009 Bombdoc (New Mexico) My wife bought me an Alterra for Christmas last year. For the most part I was happy with it. I had a few problems with the stop watch not working correctly, no big deal. This morning I found moisture inside the display. I never opened the case, yet it allowed water inside. Not very impressive. I expected better from a 130 dollar watch.
Good watch but quality lacking March 12, 2009 The Bike Guru (Brisbane, QLD Australia) Great watch. Had it for about two years now. Worn it while trekking in Peru (Inca Trail), Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, etc....Trick is to calibrate it often - like most barometric watches...Quality is an issue with the watch though. After a few months of wearing it, the rubber surrounds of the watch started to separate from the casing!!! Customer service is excellent from Highgear though. They replaced it with a new watch after I sent the old one to them. No questions asked (except for proof of purchase)...
Fantastic Watch March 2, 2009 B. Roach (South Carolina) Pros: This watch has everything. From the moment i took it out of the box I was impressed with it's look and feel. Everything that is described to the buyer is there.
Cons:the watch band is a little stiff, the band is hard to get into the holder. A little labor intensive on setup.
Alterra Highgear review February 13, 2009 T. Jamrog (LINCOLNVILLE, ME USA) I have owned a Alterra since April 2007 ( It is now 2009). Yes, the watch requires you to read the manual and work with the watch for a bit, but the results are very useful outdoors. I particularly enjoy using the altimeter function, and use it when backpacking, supplementing elevation profiles on my maps. The altitude function allows me to very accurately pinpoint my location in a way that reading the topo map and terrain view doesn't, especially when it is crappy outside and you can't see.
I bought the watch at the start of my AT thru hike in Virginia in May of 2007. I am really heard on gear, and have had to access customer service twice, once for a delamination of the rubber housing around the bevel, and recently for a tear in the housing where the pin holding the strap is inserted. Both times, I received an immediate email response, and a new watch followed. Each time it took only 6 days from when I sent in the watch to receive the new one. In the real world gear breaks. It is my experience that Highgear has given me superior customer service. I bought a second watch as a gift, and highly recommend this unit.
